Motion Grid
A personal exploration
What
Over the past year, I have been exploring the mix of graphic design and animation and it's purpose in the digital design world. How can I create a design and motion system that can be used for both communication and branding purposes?
To achieve this, I decided to create a grid of objects, select a color palette that resonated with me, and begin designing versatile assets. Given that this is a personal exploration, I prioritized the design process itself, intending to discover its applications later. In billable projects, the approach is usually the opposite: the client presents a problem, and I design a solution. Why not invert this process to emphasize creative exploration?
Upon completing the design, I turned my attention to finding practical applications. How about the digital product world? These assets could significantly improve user experience and add value to a company. Imagine opening any app (or software) and encountering a thoughtfully crafted animation accompanying a piece of information, as opposed to a plain block of text. Notice the difference? It creates added value, encouraging users to engage with your product over others.
How
Every design process begins with a rough sketch that is refined until you achieve the 'perfect' result. There are numerous iterations until a cohesive design emerges. For this project, I used Adobe Illustrator for the sketching and designing phases. In my opinion, it's the best software for creating vector art, and the designs can easily be imported into Figma afterward.
The second phase, often overlooked, is preparing the files for animation. This step is crucial as it involves breaking down the design into individual assets that need to be animated. Think of it as an archaeological excavation where you separate and catalog each find for easy retrieval later.
Finally, the most exciting part: animation. This is where the personal touch truly shines. Each animator has a unique perspective on movement, and I believe if these designs were animated by different animators, we'd see a variety of fascinating interpretations. All animations and compositions were done in Adobe After Effects.
